The Orange County Trial Lawyers Association was formed in 1963 when a few plaintiffs' attorneys got together to share information about the problems they were having and to exchange various tips and strategies with one another.

The purpose of OCTLA is:

1. To represent the interests of plaintiffs' trial lawyers and their clients.
2. To improve the quality of legal representation by educating trial lawyers and other legal professionals.
3. To encourage cooperation among members.
4. To promote the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity among trial lawyers.
5. To protect the right of injured victims.
6. To promote the public good through concerted efforts to secure safe products, a safe workplace, a clean environment, eliminate discrimination, and quality health care.
7. To promote the administration of justice.
8. To preserve the constitutional right to trial by jury.

OCTLA is governed by an elected Board, in addition to a President, President-Elect, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Parliamentarian. All are elected for a one year term. There is also a paid Executive Director.
